Popular RPG ‘Baldur’s Gate’ Receiving a Fourth Game, Many Mixed Emotions Due to the Third Game’s Major Success
Following the monumental success of Baldur’s Gate 3, Wizards of the Coast, the owner of the
Dungeons & Dragons IP, has confirmed that a successor, Baldur’s Gate 4, is in the works. In a
recent interview, Wizards of the Coast president John Hight stated, “Of course, we’re going to
do a successor.”
While this is thrilling news for fans of the beloved series, there is one major caveat: Larian
Studios, the acclaimed developer of Baldur’s Gate 3, will not be returning to create the next
installment. Larian’s CEO, Swen Vincke, has previously announced that the studio is moving on
to new projects of their own. While some are excited for a fourth game, others are protesting
against it due to Larian not being the one to develop. Whether the fourth game will be a success
is a mystery to many.
Hight’s statement clarifies that while Baldur’s Gate 4 is a definite long-term plan, it is not the
company’s next immediate D&D game. Wizards of the Coast is currently taking its time to find
the “right partner” and “right approach” to follow in Larian’s footsteps, acknowledging the
immense pressure and high bar set by the previous game. Fans are now left to speculate on
which studio will be tasked with the unenviable but exciting challenge of continuing the legacy of
the Baldur’s Gate franchise.
