‘Percy Jackson and the Olympians’ Renewed for a Third Season on Disney+

‘Percy Jackson and the Olympians’ has been renewed for a third season on Disney+.

Based on the novels by Rick Riordan, the show follows Percy, a young demigod and son of Poseidon, retelling the Greek myths in a modern setting.

The first season was released in December 2023, and was a hit with fans and critics, who praised it’s faithfulness to the books and the performances of its young cast, and led to it almost immediately being picked up for a second season, which it’s been revealed will release in December this year.

Disney is clearly keen to make the most of this success by green lighting a third season before the second has even been completed. Recently it was revealed that it was the most watched show on the platform in 2024, with over three billion minutes watched, beating out shows from both Marvel and Star Wars.

This shows some confidence in the series, and also that the streamer is looking to move away from their own IP-based content. Until recently, they’ve relied almost entirely on their Marvel and Star Wars shows to bring in subscribers, but with both franchises taking a hit in popularity, as shows like ‘Skeleton Crew’ show, and intentions to cut back on the number they make, having other franchises to fall back on makes sense. The ‘Eragon’ series is still in the works, and could get a boost because of this.

Season three of ‘Percy Jackson’ will adapt the third book in the series ‘The Titan’s Curse’, and follows Percy and his friends as they go on a quest to rescue Annabeth from the Titan Atlas. This will be the first time the book has been adapted, as its two predecessors, ‘The Lightning Thief’ and ‘Sea of Monsters’ were made into films in the 2010s, and now have been adapted into the Disney+ show.

A few weeks ago, Rick Riordan revealed that the writer’s room for season three was assembling, but this is the first official announcement we’ve had that it will be going ahead. There are no details of who will be cast, or when it will be released, though a 2026/2027 release seems likely. This news should help future proof the show and reassure fans that it won’t be getting cancelled anytime soon.
