New Sci-Fi Show ‘Murderbot’ is Officially Streaming on Apple TV
The new highly anticipated sci-fi show Murderbot has made its way to Apple TV as of
May 16th. The first two episodes of the ten-episode first season are now available, with new
episodes scheduled to drop every Friday until July 11th.
The Murderbot Diaries have garnered a dedicated following for their unique protagonist: a
part-human, part-machine security cyborg (SecUnit) who has hacked its governor module,
granting it free will. Despite its designation and past (hinted at in the first novella, All Systems
Red), this SecUnit, who privately calls itself Murderbot, is far more interested in binge-watching
media serials than engaging with the messy and illogical humans it’s often tasked with
protecting. The official synopsis reveals that Murderbot secretly gains free will in a high-tech
future and, to stay hidden, reluctantly joins a new mission protecting scientists on a dangerous
planet – all while its true desire is to be left alone with its downloaded soap operas.
Early reviews for Murderbot have been overwhelmingly positive. On Rotten Tomatoes, the
series holds a remarkable 98% approval rating, with critics praising Alexander Skarsgård’s
portrayal of the titular character, highlighting his dry wit and the surprising heart he brings to the
role. The critical consensus suggests a “refreshingly jaunty sci-fi saga” about an artificial being
finding its place. Metacritic also indicates “generally favorable reviews,” assigning the show a
score of 69 out of 100.
For fans of the Murderbot Diaries and newcomers alike, the Murderbot series on Apple TV+
promises a compelling blend of action, comedy, and science fiction, anchored by a unique and
deeply relatable protagonist in Alexander Skarsgård’s portrayal of the reluctant,
media-obsessed, and secretly heroic SecUnit.
