Marvel Studios Greenlights a Vision Spinoff with Star Trek: Picard Showrunner
Marvel Studios will once again resurrect Vision, played by Paul Bettany, in an untitled spinoff series about the character.
Variety revealed that Terry Matalas showrunner from ‘Star Trek: Picard’ will helm the series.
The publication also said that this series has set its sight on a 2026 release.
Paul Bettany will reprise the role as the character.
The original Vision died in 2018’s ‘Avengers: Infinity War’ when the Mad Titan Thanos took the Mind Stone from Vision’s head.
Vision returned in two ways in 2021’s ‘WandaVision’, first as a spectral creation of Wanda Maximoff, played by Elizabeth Olsen, and a rebuilt Vision created by the organisation S.W.O.R.D.
After a brief battle, the spectral Vision restored the rebuilt Vision’s memories, before he disappeared.
The rebuilt Vision then flew off to parts unknown, where this new spinoff will likely pick up from.
Deadline first reported about the existance of the series back in 2022, when ‘WandaVision’ creator, writer and executive producer Jac Schaeffer.
Schaeffer has since turned his attention to another‘WandaVision’ spinoff ‘Agatha All Along’ with Kathryn Hahn that will release in September.
Marvel Studios brought in Matalas after his work on Season 3 of ‘Star Trek: Picard’ to widespread critical and fan acclaim, even garning Matalas a WGA award nomination for the 2023 series finale.
The season impressed the executives at the studio – Marvel Studios President Kevin Feige, a well known ‘Star Trek’ fan, even recently appeared with Matalas on a two-hour episode of the ‘Star Trek’ podcast “Inglorious Treksperts”.
Marvel Studios hasn’t officially commented on the state of the show.
Bob Iger, CEO of Disney, confirmed at a Disney May 2024 earnings call that Marvel Studios would be lessening their ouput in the coming years to focus on quality.
