‘Jurassic World: Rebirth’ Trailer Breakdown

The first trailer has been released for ‘Jurassic World: Rebirth’, the latest entry in Universal’s dinosaur franchise, which is set to release in July. While this is the first real piece of marketing we’ve had so far, it actually reveals quite a bit, and gives a good idea of what to expect from the movie.

Universal Pictures

The opening shows a dinosaur exhibit being taken down, with a reference to the iconic falling banner from the first movie. The public is bored with dinosaurs now, which means there’s not likely to be any more attempts to found a new attraction, as ‘The Lost World’ and ‘Jurassic World’ tried to do.

Instead, the dinos are needed for a very different purpose. Their DNA can help create a cure that will be a medical revolution, but there’s only one way to get it, by getting up close to these creatures. What’s more, they are now confined to a single island off Costa Rica.

Paleontologist Dr Henry Loomis (Jonathan Bailey) is chosen for the mission, alongside Zora Bennet (Scarlet Johansson), a covert ops expert who is tasked with keeping them safe. They assemble a boat and crew and make their way to the island where things kick off.

The island in question is said to be the original research facility for Jurassic Park, which would suggest it’s Isla Sorna, the “Site B” shown in previous movies, but that was retaken by Ingen when they built Jurassic World. So, it seems like this is a new island, which sounds like a continuity error, as we’ve never heard of it before, and it contradicts what was mentioned in ‘Fallen Kingdom’, where there was only supposed to be one island left with dinosaurs on it, which was Isla Nublar.

The team reach the island and have to collect DNA samples from the three biggest dinosaurs. It’s not specified which three these are exactly, though one of them is some form of Pteranodon, as they collect the samples from its eggs. The other two could be the Titanosaurus sauropod shown in the trailer, or possibly the old favourite, T-Rex.

Whatever they are, it’s clear this won’t be an easy task. As you’d expect, there are a lot of dinosaurs shown in the trailer, though aside from Titanosaurus, there don’t appear to be any new ones. Naturally, the Raptors are back, along with other familiar faces, like Diloposaurus, the same kind that killed Nedry in the original. So are the SPinosaurus first shown in ‘Jurassic Park III’, and the sea-dwelling Mosasaur.

There’s a big reveal in this trailer, something that’s had fans talking for a long time, the appearance of a mutant dinosaur. It’s been called a cross between a T-Rex, Xenomorph and Rancor from ‘Star Wars’ by director Gareth Edwards, and there are suggestions it’s an early attempt to create a Tyrannosaur that failed.

This new creature is a big deviation for the franchise. The ‘Jurassic World’ movies have experimented with hybrids before, but they were usually just crossed with other dinosaurs, and always looked prehistoric. This is like nothing we’ve seen before, and is much more alien, and looks like a big threat for the heroes to face.

In some ways, this movie has a resemblance to ‘Jurassic Park III’, with its standalone story, unconnected to earlier films, and its more grounded look. It also has a similar plot, with a small group of characters returning to an abandoned island. It even features some similar scenes, with the Pteranodons and the Spinosaurus boat chase.

It seems that it’s trying to be more grounded after the stunt action antics and trained Raptors of the last three, and is something of a soft reboot for the franchise, with little connection to what came before.

‘Jurassic World: Rebirth’ will be released on July 2 this year.
