Ironheart Official Trailer Reaction

Marvel Studios has finally released the official trailer for ‘Ironheart’, the next Disney+ MCU series. It hints that it will be a low-key affair, with more personal stakes than Marvel ending the world. And that’s refreshing, especially as ‘Ironheart’ finds itself releasing in between ‘Thunderbolts*’ and ‘Fantastic Four: First Steps’. Dominique Thorne returns as Riri Williams, and Anthony Ramos joins the cast as Parker Robbins, aka The Hood.

Marvel Entertainment

Ironheart very quickly has to prove herself capable in the trailer, escaping a Jigsaw-esque puzzle out of an elevator, clearly intended to show her intelligence. This is unfortunately downplayed when the trailer then TELLS the audience, twice in quick succession she’s a genius. Hopefully this will be it, else it’ll get repetitive. This is of course to build her up to create her own Iron suit, which looks extremely chunky. Though the white is certainly a better colour than the red in ‘Wakanda Forever’, a film which is referenced in the trailer. It’s clear Williams is ignored in her personal life, so Robbins gives her the attention she craves. Of course, it’ll be for The Hood’s nefarious own ends. This is a fine setup, but not hugely exciting.

Audiences do get a quick look at The Hood’s costume, and while it might be comic accurate, that doesn’t stop it from looking cheap. Marvel Studios have essentially just dressed Ramos in a long red raincoat and called it a costume. It’s no secret the bottom has fallen out of streaming shows in terms of funding, but this is the first time it’s properly manifested itself on screen. Hopefully this isn’t the final form of his costume, and that The Hood has a glow up in the show. He’s a small-time criminal positioning himself as Ironheart’s benefactor, and it’s clear Riri knows little about his activities, suggesting the two might fall out when she does, and Robbins will go full villain on her.

The show is positioning itself as a science versus mystical magic affair, with Williams obviously in touch with engineering, maths, and physics to get her Iron suit off the ground, and Robbins and The Hood being tied to Ghost Rider and Dormammu. Mephisto might finally make his long speculated appearance. This has long been a theme in the MCU and in the comics, but it’s quite explicit here.

The MCU has created some good street-level shows recently, with ‘Your Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man’ and ‘Daredevil: Born Again’, so here’s hoping that streak continues. Maybe the show will overcome it’s slightly dull setup. Audiences will be able to see the first three episodes of ‘Ironheart’ on June 24 on Disney+
