How to Train Your Dragon Official Trailer Reaction

‘How To Train Your Dragon’ recently got a second trailer to tease the upcoming blockbuster, hitting audiences with an infusion of nostalgia so strong they might overdose. It’s a trailer reinforcing the idea the animated film was perfect as it was, as it retreads familiar ground from a brilliant story without any innovation. While the visuals look pretty, it’s a shame they won’t be put to use on a more ambitious story that could inpsire.

Universal Pictures

The trailer starts with Stoick attempting to turn Hiccup into the dragon killing machine Stoick and many Vikings are, pushing him into the training arena where he and other other members of the next generation of the island must take over and lead the fight. There is certainly a sense of realism to these shots, even as they’re populated with CGI dragons. Audiences get a good look at Stormfly, a beautiful looking beast, along with a quick look at Nico Parker’s Astrid. She has to live up to her animated counterpart, a tall order.

As the trailer goes on, audiences get to the tense meeting of Hiccup and Toothless, built on the suspense of whether the runt of the boy – which, actor Mason Thomas captures well – willl either become a Viking and kill the dragon, or let him live. It culminates in Hiccup not killing the dragon, and instead befriending him, leading to the iconic first touch. Audiences get a look at several other amazingly coloured dragons as they emerge from the Alpha’s hiding spot. The Alpha briefly shown later, a frightening sight.

The trailer features Hiccup’s difficult relationship to his dad, with tempers flaring as Stoick learns the truth about Hiccup’s relationship with his dad. Audiences get a snippet of the flying, which will surely be hard hitting, as his friends as he saves his father from the behemoth of the Alpha. Even if nobody knows the story going in, this trailer gives it away completely in two minutes. It’s astounding. While there’s no doubt newcomers will be awed by the story for the first time, for those that have already seen this film while only have the nostalgia to like. The trailer doesn’t dispel the idea that this film will have any merit beyond retelling a beautiful story with visuals that, while stunning, could have been used on for completely new and original vision.
