Helldivers 2 Movie Adaptation Announced by Sony
The fight for Super Earth will be brought to the big screen, as Sony announced at technology conference CES that they will be making a ‘Helldivers’ movie adaptation.
The ‘Helldivers’ franchise was propelled to new heights in 2024, when developer Arrowhead released the sequel to 2015’s ‘Helldivers’, called ‘Helldivers 2’, to huge success.
Inspired by films like ‘Starship Troopers’, the universe shows a parody take on war, as the fasict Super Earth regime deploys its Helldiver army to fight galactic wars against bugs called Terminids, robot automatons, and an alien faction called the Illuminate.
Super Earth constantly preaches about freedom and liberty, and has a system of governance called “Managed Democracy” it wants to spread across the galaxy.
At CES, Asad Qizilbash, head of PlayStation Productions, said: “Looking ahead as to what might come next, I’m excited to announce we are working with Sony Pictures on developing a film adaptation of our amazingly popular PlayStation game ‘Helldivers 2’.”
When the third person co-op shooter released in February 2024, players flocked to the game, making it the fastest selling PlayStation Studios game of all time, and caused server capacity issues.
Its use of friendly fire always being on generated moments helped the game go viral on social media, as well as its satirical tone.
‘Helldivers 2’ helped to reignite interest in ‘Starship Troopers’, a film that was released in 1997.
The adaptation annoucement came alongside other video game adaptation news, such as the release of the trailer for season two of ‘The Last of Us’ and an announcement that a movie based on Guerrilla’s ‘Horizon Zero Dawn’ is in the works.
