Five Cult Classic Sci-Fi Films From the 80s to Revisit
The 1980s, especially ‘85, was possibly the most exciting time for sci-fi films, where
many famous ones were introduced and still being watched today. Here is a list of sci-fi movies
you need to revisit for that taste of nostalgia.
Back to the Future – The popular cult classic follows the story of small-town California teen
Marty McFly who is thrown back into the 1950s after an experiment by his scientist friend goes
wrong. This movie is one of the most watched science-fiction films of its time, and still talked
about today.
Re-Animator – This gruesome sci-fi film is not for the squeamish. Based on the 1922 H.P.
Lovecraft novel Herbert West – Reanimator, Re-Animator is a mad-scientist sci-fi horror film with
comedic elements in the mix, revolving around the story of a new medical student arriving at his
college campus with girlfriend, who both get heavily involved in bizarre experiments. Horrifying
side-effects come into play when Herbert reanimates his dead professor back to life.
The Quiet Earth – This thriller is a must-watch for those who feel like getting a taste of what it
would be like to wake up as the last person on Earth. When scientist Zac Hobson finds himself
the only person on the planet, he is driven into madness and on the edge of offing himself.
When he eventually adapts to a routine, he comes across two other survivors and they try to
understand what caused everyone else to vanish. They also worry whatever happened…could
possibly happen again.
The Stuff – This film refers to a mysterious white goo which tastes sweet and addictive, causing
people to lose their minds if they don’t get a hold of more. This film embraces a bizarre plot with
comedic value, and the theme of consumerism. The white goo doesn’t just act as an addictive
substance, but consumes the minds of those who eat it. It goes as far as mind control and
causes people to kill.
Lifeforce – if you’re looking for a grotesque B-movie vibe, look no further. Lifeforce explores the
plot of a female alien in a human body. It’s meant for those who are looking for sleaziness and a
gory mayhem, but also the twist of an apocalypse where a vampiric infection takes hold of the
entire city of London. It sounds chaotic, but that’s the exact audience it’s meant for.
These films are a must-see, especially for those craving something comedic, over-the-top,
intense, or just unpredictable overall.
