1. What influenced the selection of the Smurfs theme for this tabletop game?
We’re in a golden age of tabletop roleplaying games, and it felt like the perfect time to bring something fresh and joyful into the space. The Smurfs, with their iconic charm and timeless appeal, are a perfect fit for a roleplaying game that emphasizes exploration, creativity, and adventure. The Smurfs inherently represent values like teamwork, community, and the idea that each Smurf is unique and can be whatever they want to be. Our game creator, Kevin Borrup, saw the potential for players to step into a Smurf’s shoes (or rather, blue feet) and experience the whimsy of their world while going on thrilling adventures.
2. Is this game appropriate for all age groups? Or is there a target age group? If so,
why?
Absolutely, the game is designed to be accessible to all age groups! We envision it as an all-ages game, suitable for everyone from young kids to seasoned roleplayers. Whether you’re a Smurf fan discovering tabletop roleplaying for the first time or an experienced player looking for something lighthearted, the mechanics are simple enough to be learned quickly, while still allowing depth and strategy for older players. This is a game that families, friends, and even solo adventurers can enjoy.
3. What was the duration of the team’s process to develop color, the inquiries, and
the subsequent items for this incredible game?
The development process for The Smurfs RPG took considerable time and care, with a talented team of contributors working on different elements. Kevin Borrup led the game creation, presenting a fully working game concept that captured the essence of the Smurfs to both Maestro Media and Peyo. Jonathan Gilmour-Long and Jason Azevedo assisted in further development, adding depth to the game’s production and design. Patrick Morrison edited the game books, while Peter Wocken and Jason collaborated on graphic design. The beautiful Smurf artwork was crafted by Alain Peral and Ludo Borecki from Peyo, giving the game that classic Smurf look and feel. Bringing this vision to life was truly a team effort, with every detail carefully considered.
4. What are some instances of the game? Discussions on character vulnerabilities
and abilities? Progression levels, and more?
In The Smurfs Roleplaying Game, players can step into the shoes of classic Smurf characters or create their own unique Smurfs, each with distinctive abilities. Central to gameplay is the Effort mechanic—when a Smurf attempts to succeed at a challenging task, they spend Effort, which reduces difficulty and increases their chances of success. But Effort is a limited resource, so players must strategize to avoid becoming “smurfed out.” Spending Effort also serves as a way of marking character progression. At the end of a session spent Effort converts into Build Points that can be used on increasing attributes, the bonus value of Equipment, or even to enhance a character’s Smurf House. All these enhancements have in-game effects that prepare a Smurf for even bigger challenges.
As Kevin says: “Our goal was to make gameplay both accessible and exciting. The Effort mechanic adds a layer of strategy that’s easy for new players to grasp but engaging for seasoned ones, too. And with the Smurf Power Die, players have a shot at achieving critical successes, which adds a really fun element of surprise to each turn. Additionally, smurfberries serve as in-game currency, allowing players to tap into the unique abilities of NPC Smurfs. These mechanics create a balance of creativity, resource management, and collaborative storytelling that lets players shape their character’s journey as they progress through the Smurf Village and beyond.”
5. Why choose a tabletop game instead of a virtual game? Do you think it would
bring back a sense of traditional gaming, since everything is now digital ?
There’s something truly magical about a tabletop game that digital experiences often can’t replicate. The Smurfs represent community, togetherness, and a bit of nostalgia—all things that are perfectly suited to a traditional tabletop format. We wanted players to have that shared experience of gathering around a table, telling stories, and imagining together. Tabletop gaming allows for more intimate social interaction, encourages creativity, and gives players more control over the narrative. With The Smurfs Roleplaying Game, we hope to bring people back to the table by offering immersive, collaborative fun.
6. For the fans, what is the target price point for the game ?
We have multiple tiers on our Kickstarter campaign, with options for different backers. This allows fans to choose the level of involvement that suits them best, from core rulebooks to all-in bundles with added content and accessories.
7. Curious are there any other Smurfs expansions to the game in the works and or other animated series you are looking into developing games for ?
We’re thrilled with the enthusiasm we’ve seen for The Smurfs Roleplaying Game, and there’s definitely a chance for future expansions if the community shows strong interest!

8. Lastly, what aspect of the Smurfs do you enjoy the most and who is your favorite character?
Personally, I love the positivity and sense of adventure that The Smurfs embody. They’re resilient, always helping one another, and they embrace their quirks, which I think resonates with a lot of people. My favorite Smurf? That’s a tough one, but I’d probably say Papa Smurf. He’s wise, caring, and a great leader—a bit like a Dungeon Master in his own right, guiding and supporting the others on their journeys!
