Bomb Rush Cyberfunk Is A Modern Blast From The Past

Bomb Rush Cyberfunk is a stylistic game that draws on nostalgia while remaining unique. Its story follows Red who’s trying to get his head back after being beheaded at the start. This is the backdrop for why you’re going around spray painting buildings and taking over rivals’ territories. The focus is really on gameplay. Characters have bright personalities and unique designs that are hard to forget. However, the world itself doesn’t seem to matter as much as cool combos.

Team Reptile

This is easy to overlook since the city is built like a big skatepark. This can make the map a little hard to get used to. There’s a lot of height changes that need to be made quickly, which can be disorienting. Controls are so smooth though you can get moving without too many issues. There’s plenty of side missions, speed trials, and collectibles to make up for the general flatness of Bomb Rush’s world.

Taking on rival gangs is satisfying. You have a variety of tags that become available as the game progresses. These are comically over the top and bring fun to the combat when the police actually show up. Where you get more and more ridiculous tricks for higher scores while taking on rivals, the combat is not very exciting. Enemies seem to rubber band away from hits instead of feeling like there’s been an actual impact. This makes fights feel cartoony and quickly loses its appeal.

Bomb Rush Cyberfunk is a great game for those who missed the Y2K era of gaming. And it’s also fun for those who want to “revisit” older games, without the frustrating clunkiness that’s inevitable. The soundtrack is just as experimental as the graphics look. It elevates the visuals even if it’s not your usual tastes. If you’ve been yearning for another game and haven’t already picked this up, now might be the time to add it to the backlog.
