The Axis Unseen Is A Fantasy Hunting Game That Feels New And Nostalgic At The Same Time
The Axis Unseen is an open world, fantasy hunting game. There are no objectives creating a neat guide on where to go, or what to do. You’re dumped right into a cave and from there you wander out into an extremely hostile world. If you do want to stop and take pictures, there’s a pacifist mode. The difficulty can’t be changed mid-game though.
The atmosphere is incredibly tense. The supernatural creatures are also hunting you. Meanwhile the story unfolds through the occasional note. Which is also a downside as the game gives no indication that you need to look out for these. Until then it’s just aimless running between intense fighting.
It can be a little awkward learning the bow controls. If you’re using a controller, the release button is the same as your melee attack. The bow also feels slow and unwieldy until you’ve upgraded it enough. Combat ends up feeling too fast while you’re too slow, potentially for a long time. Since there have already been a lot of updates, combat may become smoother; while keeping its difficulty.
The Axis Unseen demo showed off detailed landscapes. Giant skeletons of human and nonhuman creatures help create a grand scale even though there wasn’t a map. The UI is almost entirely contained to your bow. This game also has a unique feature. Enemies can smell you if the wind is blowing in your direction. The Axis Unseen is a unique take on the survival genre and it’s available now.
