Construction Firm promises Space Elevator by 2050 - A Japanese construction company (Obayashi Corp) has unveiled a project to build a space elevator on Earth. The concept has been studied for decades, but the Osaka based firm famous for other very ambitious constructions, believes that materials technology has reached the point where a practical system is within reach.
In Obayashi’s project, a cable would be stretched up to 96,000 kilometers, or about one-fourth of the distance between the Earth and the moon. One end of the cable would be anchored at a spaceport on the ground, while the other would be fitted with a counterweight.
The terminal station would house laboratories and living space. The car could carry up to 30 people to the station at 200 kilometers per hour, which would mean a 7-1/2 day trip to reach the station. Magnetic linear motors are one possible means of propulsion for the car, according to Obayashi.
The last space suit on the Moon
This spacesuit was the last spacesuit worn on the moon, and was made for, and worn by astronaut Eugene A. Cernan, commander of the Apollo 17 mission in December of 1972.
The suit was constructed by the International Latex Corporation, with the designation A-7LB, and consisted of approximately 26 layers of materials designed to protect the astronaut from the extremes of temperature to be found in the vacuum of space and on the lunar surface.
When combined with the portable life support system and other components making up the extravehicular mobility unit, it all weighed approximately 185 pounds here on earth.
NASA began a historic voyage to Mars with the Nov. 26 launch of the Mars Science Laboratory, which carries a car-sized rover named Curiosity.
Einstein Defeated, FTL Travel is Possible - CERN announced they have observed neutrinos moving faster than the speed of light. If confirmed, this discovery will have astonishing implications; not only does it mean Einstein’s theory of special relativity is wrong, but it opens the possibility of faster-than-light space travel. In addition, it may crack open the door to time travel as well.
Scientists at the world’s largest physics lab said Thursday they have clocked neutrinos traveling faster than light. That’s something that according to Einstein’s 1905 special theory of relativity - the famous E = mc2 equation - just doesn’t happen.
“The feeling that most people have is this can’t be right, this can’t be real,” said James Gillies, a spokesman for the European Organization for Nuclear Research. The organization, known as CERN, hosted part of the experiment.

Very cool show!!
In the mid 70’s, NASA commissioned an artist to paint actual science based concepts of humans living in space in the distant future. I’m gonna post a bunch of pictures of these, 2 a day at first, but maybe I’ll speed up if it feels like it’s taking too long.
First up: O’Neill cylinders! This is the exterior of a massive cylindrical space station with an atmosphere contained inside proposed by physicist Gerard O’Neill. This design was codenamed “Island Three”.
