The Falcon 9 SpaceX rocket lifts off from space launch complex 40 at the Cape Canaveral Air Force Station in Cape Canaveral, Fla., early Tuesday, May 22. This launch marks the first time, a private company sends its own rocket to deliver supplies to the International Space Station.
The Falcon 9 rocket also happens to have the cremated remains of James “Scotty” Doohan on board. The wish of late actor James Doohan — a.k.a Scotty in Star Trek — has finally come true: His ashes have been “beamed” to outer space.
SpaceX launch a reminder that NASA isn’t the only game in town anymore. Aspiring engineers, rocket designers, space geeks look to ‘New Space’ companies to boldly go where only governments used to go.
The last space suit on the Moon
This spacesuit was the last spacesuit worn on the moon, and was made for, and worn by astronaut Eugene A. Cernan, commander of the Apollo 17 mission in December of 1972.
The suit was constructed by the International Latex Corporation, with the designation A-7LB, and consisted of approximately 26 layers of materials designed to protect the astronaut from the extremes of temperature to be found in the vacuum of space and on the lunar surface.
When combined with the portable life support system and other components making up the extravehicular mobility unit, it all weighed approximately 185 pounds here on earth.
NASA began a historic voyage to Mars with the Nov. 26 launch of the Mars Science Laboratory, which carries a car-sized rover named Curiosity.
One of my favorite films!!
